De kerk was altijd al het spirituele centrum van het oorspronkelijke boerendorp. De omstandigheden zijn niet meer hetzelfde, de bevolking is ingrijpend veranderd, maar de kerk is nog altijd het zenuwcentrum en de ontmoetingsplaats van Ruigoord. In en rond de kerk worden de culturele activiteiten van het dorp gepresenteerd. In de bijna 50-jarige geschiedenis van de kerk als spiritueel centrum van de culturele vrijhaven is er heel wat in dat gebouw gepasseerd. Het was (en is) tentoonstellingsruimte, auditorium, concertruimte, stemlokaal, feestzaal, trouw- en rouwlocatie, werkplaats, café/restaurant, vergaderzaal, laboratorium en broeinest voor velerlei Ruigoordse activiteiten en evenementen. Het gebouw uit ongeveer 1880 heeft vele stormen doorstaan en is nu wel enigszins toe aan een opknapbeurt. In het jaar 2021 is begonnen met een restauratie van het metselwerk en andere conserverende werkzaamheden, opdat het meest markante gebouw van Ruigoord weer ten minste mee kan tot in 2073 het huidige Ruigoord 100 jaar zal worden.
