Kerouac op weg in Nederland

Op 8 Oktober komt er een internationaal gezelschap samen voor de 100ste verjaardag van de inmiddels overleden schrijver Jack Kerouac. Samen met dit gezelschap zal het woord een extra bijzondere editie wijden aan het leven van Kerouac – Kerouac op weg in Nederland

Kerouac zijn verjaardag werd eerder dit jaar onder andere gevierd met de eerste Nederlandse vertaling van Lonesome Traveller, ‘Eenzame reiziger’ een verzameling reisessays die Kerouac in 1960 gepubliceerd heeft.

Meer informatie over het programma volgt spoedig. Deelnemers komen onder andere uit Duitsland, de VS, Spanje en Belgie.

Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac (Lowell, 12 maart 1922 – Saint Petersburg, 21 oktober 1969)

Jack Kerouac schreef de bijbel van de Beat Generation.

Kerouac wilde het leven van de Amerikaanse reiziger vastleggen en ontwikkelde een spontane stijl van proza dat de essentie van beweging probeerde vast te leggen in een oneindige stroom rauwe gedachten en observaties.

Zijn boek On the Road uit 1957 is hier het beste voorbeeld van. Hij schreef de eerste, nog ruwe en expliciete versie van dit boek op een enorme rol papier van ruim 36 meter lang.[1] Aangedreven door benzedrine en koffie hamerde Kerouac On the Road in april 1951 in drie luttele weken op zijn typemachine, ondanks het feit dat de roman pas zes jaar later zou verschijnen.

Gemiddeld 6.500 woorden per dag op acht papierrollen van 3,6 meter die vervolgens aan elkaar werden gekleefd. Dat was nodig om zijn ‘spontane proza’ zo weinig mogelijk te verstoren door het indraaien van een vers vel papier.
